Roubaix Ready

Posted: Thursday, April 08, 2010

Rich Hincapie has been hanging out with George all week in Belgium. In fact, all the Hincapie men are hanging out together this week. It's sort of a family tradition for the guys to spend some time together in Belgium during one of the most important weeks of George’s season.

You probably read on Cyclingnews.com that George is ready to race this Sunday in Paris Roubaix. Fortunately for us, Rich is there to give us the extra inside scoop on George and his preparation for this weekend's Hell of the North. The Hincapie brothers know each other pretty well, and here’s what Rich had to say about George this week.

"We can't wait until Sunday. George is looking great. I don't think I've ever seen him this fit and confident. Little things about his riding or his appearance are easy for me to see, and I see that he will be at 100% for Sunday. Look for my twitter updates (@richhincapie) during the race."

That's a strong endorsement from the man that might know him best. We're all excited to watch him race on Sunday. Good luck, George!

4th at Gent-Wevelgem

Posted: Tuesday, March 30, 2010

George made a strong fourth place showing this past weekend in the Belgium Classic, Gent-Wevelgem. George knows this race well, having won it in 2001 and scoring six top-five finishes in 13 attempts. He made the front group on the day and raced hard all the way to the line. Knowing that his breakaway companions included former teammate and sprint expert, Bernhard Eisel, George launched an attack with 400m to go. He was racing to win and he took his shot. He commented about this in his post-race interview on Cyclingnews.com.

"I knew that Eisel was watching Gilbert," explained Hincapie. "I wanted to risk it and see if one of them would let me go, but I didn't have the gas for the final meters."

George proved that he's feeling better after some early season illnesses that have hindered his training a little this spring. He seems to be on track for a fitness peak for some of his favorite races of the year. He'll race the Tour of Flanders this Sunday and Paris-Roubaix on April 11.

Start of the Classics

Posted: Monday, March 22, 2010

The first Classic of the season is finally complete. My European campaign started off a little rocky with bad weather and a winter bug, but at Milano-San Remo my legs finally felt good for the first time. Going up the Cipressa I was comfortable with the pace. Going down the descent, the guys on the front were really hammering it and some gaps opened up. Before I knew it, the lead guys had 30 seconds on the rest of us and there was no way we were going to bring them back. My teammate Markus Burghardt made the move and did a great job of representing BMC in the finale.

This coming weekend I head North for Gent – Wevelgem. We've got a strong classics team for the races in Belgium. I'm looking forward to racing alongside great guys like Ballan, Kroon and Burghardt in the cobbled classics where we hope to get some results.

Ciao, George

George’s Feedback on Tirreno Stage 6

Posted: Monday, March 15, 2010

You will hear from George’s comments that today was not necessarily the longest stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, but it may have been one of the toughest. The team battled for position all day and came out with a great result. Cadel made the podium and the guys are ready to fight another day. Check it out.

Tough Weekend in Belgium

Posted: Wednesday, March 03, 2010

It was a pretty tough weekend in Belgium for George and his BMC teammates. George went into the weekend with a head cold and the miserable weather didn't help matters one bit. He's a true champion so he soldiered on to do his job, head cold and all. But, the elements seemed to be against him.

On Saturday in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, he never really got his legs under him after suffering with illness all week. His tweet after the race summed up his day in Gent. "Ouch, had a rough day today. Legs paid for my sick week I think. Hoping tomorrow is better..."

He suffered some bad luck on Sunday in Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne, in some nasty Belgium spring conditions. Following the race, he tweeted: "Flat tire early on. Had to wait for dropped groups to get a wheel. -never saw front of race again. Maybe a good thing. Weather was horrible."

When George Hincapie tells you the weather is horrible, you know it's bad! He's healing up and starting to feel better. Tirreno Adriatico starts next Wednesday, March 10 in Italy, and he should be ready to go by then. Get well, George.

The Warm California Sun

Posted: Friday, February 05, 2010

This past weekend was our team training camp in California. It was great getting to meet the rest of the guys and spending some time with them on the bike. We put in several hundred miles in the beautiful area around Agoura Hills. There’s great climbs nearby plus some amazing views from Highway 1. In fact, I’ve enjoyed the riding here so much that I decided to extend my stay to do some solo training in the California sun. It’s a nice break from the frigid temperatures we’ve had back home. (I hear they’re calling for freezing rain in Greenville this weekend.)

After this training block is done, I’m headed back to Europe for the start of my European race schedule. I’ll start off with the semi-clasics Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne in preparation for the big classics in April. BMC has put together a great classics team. I'm looking forward to racing with these guys.
